In the 1930's Leerdam glass factory began to experiment with a new technique which used small grains of glass and a pressing machine. The first results were called Graniver and the process was used to manufacture opaque pots and bowls.
In total the factory produced seven graniver products in a range of sizes and colours sometimes with stands or liners. The process was cheap and innovative but also brought some inherent problems. The bowls and dishes made in this technique are very vulnerable to chips and hairline cracks. The colour of the glass grains is often not thoroughly mixed, which leads to a marbled effect or other patches of darker colour.
This small group of objects has become a fiercely competitive area of collecting.
